“The lady with the flower behind her ear”
Lyn was born in Johannesburg in 1949, moved to Cape Town in 1982 and has been married the man of her dreams for 52 years. She is blessed with a son and daughter and three grandchildren. She spent 20 years as pre- primary teacher and Principal, starting her career at St. George's Pre- school in 1974 before moving to Sweet Valley Pre-Primary in 1987.
Lyn has taught a year long course for Beginners in Oil Painting for 19 years in Newlands, Cape Town. 2026 - year 20 - will be her final year delivering the course. She invites prospective students not to miss out on this opportunity.
Lyn uses art to explores the essence of life in a sketchy impressionistic way and favours charcoal, oils, water colours and acrylics. "I find huge joy when catching the light," she says. The different mediums facilitate her creative flow and bring freshness to her work. She paints a variety of subject matter, 'from landscapes, flowers and trees to the glorious sea, gulls and doves. One of my biggest joys is painting en plein air, in nature, with sea spray and fresh wind on my face, ” she says.
Her guiding motto is "Art is play. And play is life.
"We all touch one another by becoming inspired, richer humans, helping each other to 'see‘ in a new way, appreciating the world around us with immense joy and gratitude one mark at a time!
Achievements
"Over twenty years ago, I set the goal of winning awards for my work in every medium and am proud to say that I have achieved this. In 2007, I was the 21st artist in 100 years to be awarded as “Fellow of the South African Society of Artists”. I won SASA's Eleonor trophy three times, its Best Oil, Watercolour, Pastel and Sketching trophy and the Constantiaberg Art Society's Founders trophy, just last year!
"I exhibited at the Noordhoek Art Point Gallery for a year.
"My artworks have been sold to many parts of the globe. My Stone Pines paintings have settled in New Foundland and I am delighted that my Brighton bicycle was bought by one of South Africa's top artists and SASA patron's, Sam Nhlengethwa, for his personal collection. I have also presented Plein air talks and demos at both Societies over the years."
Inspiration
Lyn credits the following teachers with shaping her artistic skills:
Les Charnock - my pastel journey
Margie Johnson - water colours
Natalie Hirschman - oils
'Find your joy' online course by Louise Fletcher - mixed media
Debbie Mackinnon - wild sketching
"I am so grateful for all these arty angels!" she enthuses.
