About Aretha

Aretha_edited.jpg

Born in North West province, Aretha was inspired to begin art at the tender age of eight when she saw  Rembrandt's 'Night Watch' in person. The painting's contrast between light and darkness left an indelible impression on her and fueled her own artistic aspirations.

Following high school, Aretha followed in her mother's footsteps by studying Fine Arts, followed by various other art courses in later life. She found her niche in pastels. Her artistic style and technique are heavily influenced by the time she spent living in Europe, North Macedonia and Russia. On her return to South Africa, a life changing experience with cancer gave added meaning to her purpose in art. She became keenly aware of the interplay between the physical and spiritual forces of Light and dark and made it her goal to portray the winning edge that the former always has over the latter. Her Christian faith thus became a primary theme; she sees her art as a testament to the source of Light and Hope - God Almighty as expressed in Christ and His message.

Aretha's painting, 'My Soul, Waiting' (shown below) has been featured in the European THA Future Stars magazine. Her other paintings have been virtually exhibited in galleries in Europe. Locally, she participates in juried and open exhibitions.
